From cheering in the stands to waving team flags, sports bring joy, but they also leave a carbon footprint. Globally, the sports industry is worth around $600 billion and produces roughly 350 million tonnes of CO₂ every year. In India, major events like the IPL, Pro Kabaddi League, and Premier League-style football matches contribute significantly, with stadium operations, fan travel, and event logistics adding thousands of tonnes of emissions annually. This blog explores the hidden carbon costs of sporting events and practical ways fans and organisers can make every game greener and more responsible.

Understanding the Carbon Cost of Sporting Events

The sports themselves are thrilling, but every match, tournament, or league has an environmental cost. The carbon cost for sports comes from various sources: There are emissions generated directly by operations at stadiums, thin lights, air-conditioning, and energy-hungry electronics systems, all add up, as well as indirect emissions, through fan travel to and from games, plus team logistics, merchandise production, and the creation of equipment. In sustainability parlance, these tend to be referred to as Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, encompassing everything from venue energy consumption through the entire supply chain.

The environmental impact is significant. Even giant events like the IPL or Premier League-style football matches in India or perhaps even international tournaments like the FIFA World Cup or Olympics take measurable tolls on pollution, water use, and land resources. From the energy used in stadiums in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata to the thousands of fans travelling across territories, understanding this carbon footprint is the first step towards planning greener, smarter sports events.

Hidden Emissions in Sports Events

  • Fan Travel: Thousands of spectators flying, driving, or taking trains create huge Scope 3 emissions.

  • Stadium Construction & Materials: Concrete, steel, and artificial turf locked in carbon for decades.

  • Energy Consumption: Lighting, HVAC, giant screens, and broadcasting equipment use significant electricity.

  • Food & Beverage Services: Production, transport, packaging, and leftover waste contribute to the footprint.

  • Merchandise & Promotional Materials: Jerseys, banners, and plastics carry carbon across supply chains.

In India, this is clear at events like the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 and Premier League-style football matches. Thousands of fans traveling across states, paired with energy-intensive stadium operations and catering, created far more CO₂ emissions than most of us realise. Understanding these hidden emissions helps organisers, fans, and athletes make smarter, greener choices, proving that every run, goal, or cheer doesn’t have to cost the planet.

Why Measuring Carbon Emissions Matters

Knowing the carbon footprint of a sports event isn’t merely about playing with numbers; it’s about running smarter, greener events. For organizers, emissions tracking can help plan responsibly, minimize waste, and make smarter decisions about energy use, travel, and materials. Fans, sponsors, and governing bodies increasingly expect events to be environmentally accountable, so reporting your emissions adds trust and credibility. The measurement of carbon can go beyond compliance; companies have found that you can also save money, become more operationally efficient, and even give fans a feeling of contributing to something larger, a game that scores for both the sport and the planet.

Strategies for Eco-Conscious Event Planning

Sustainable Sports Education: Train staff, volunteers, and fans on green practices. Run workshops, share online guides, and run awareness campaigns that make eco-friendly behaviour second nature.

Low-Carbon Event Operations: Encourage fans to use public transport, cycle, or walk to stadiums. Power stadiums with solar or wind energy and switch to energy-efficient LED lighting. Implement zero-waste strategies like composting food waste, recycling, and sustainable catering.

Responsible Event Management Practices: Offset unavoidable emissions with verified carbon programs. Choose sustainable materials for stadium décor, merchandise, and infrastructure. Collaborate with sponsors and vendors to bring everyone on board for greener events.

Fans’ Role in Reducing Sports Emissions

Eco-Friendly Travel: Take the train, bus, or carpool with friends instead of driving solo. It cuts emissions and makes the journey more fun.

Waste-Smart Behaviour: Carry reusable water bottles and snacks. Say no to single-use plastics at stadiums and fan zones.

Join the Green Effort: Follow stadium signage for segregating wet and dry waste. Participate in on-ground eco-initiatives and fan-led clean-up drives.

Interactive Engagement: Fans can test their knowledge with quizzes like “How Green Are You at the Game?” to learn while having fun.

Case Studies: Leading the Way in Sustainable Sports

ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 (India): The World Cup was not only a showcase for exciting matches, but also the world’s biggest test of stadium waste management. Fans numbering in the thousands are leaving tons of waste, from plastic bottles to food wrappers. Greenmyna joined hands with Maidaansaaf, the flagship initiative of Anandana Foundation from Coca-Cola India, in addressing this challenge. Between them, they made sure the stadiums were spotless, supplied litter-free with easy-to-manage stickers on clear separation of dry and wet garbage, and reduced to two bags in various collection points as matches unfolded. Post-match, all vehicles transporting waste were inspected to validate correct segregation. Stadiums such as Dr DY Patil Sports Academy (Navi Mumbai), Barsapara (Guwahati), Holkar (Indore), and ACA-VDCA Stadium (Visakhapatnam) were branded in support of the cause, with supporters being urged to participate. Among all the venues, Greenmyna and Maidaansaaf successfully recycled more than 15,500 kg of waste in total–45% was recycled while 28% composted–proving that even mega-sized events can be environmentally friendly without detracting from any fan experience.

Conclusion

Sports bring us joy, excitement, and unforgettable moments, but they also leave a hidden carbon footprint that’s easy to overlook. Fans and organisers hold the power to change that. By tracking emissions, choosing greener travel, cutting waste, and spreading awareness, we can make every match, tournament, and event not just thrilling but also kind to the planet. Let’s cheer for our teams and the Earth at the same time!

Make your game day green, travel smart, reduce waste, and support eco-friendly sports!
